Dozens of US tech firms violate EU privacy promises

Thirty U.S. data brokers and data management firms, including Adobe Systems, AOL, and Salesforce.com, are violating privacy promises they've made regarding their handling of the personal information of EU residents, a privacy group said in a complaint to be filed Thursday.

DOJ asks court to vacate stay in Microsoft email privacy case

The U.S. Department of Justice has asked a New York court to vacate a stay on an order that would require Microsoft to turn over to the government certain emails held abroad. The company, which had asked for the stay to pursue an appeal, may now have to refuse to comply with the order after the stay is lifted for its appeal to be acceptable by the appeals court, according to the plan outlined by DOJ to the court, citing a "jurisdictional defect."

Microsoft, Google, others back Facebook in New York privacy dispute

Key technology companies including Google, Microsoft and Twitter on Friday filed in support of Facebook's dispute with the New York County District Attorney's office over the collection of user data in bulk under a gag order for a fraud investigation. The New York Civil Liberties Union and the American Civil Liberties Union also filed an amicus curiae brief Friday in support of the Facebook plea.

Google scans your Gmail inbox for child porn to help catch criminals, but dont worry about loss of privacy (yet)

Last week, a man in Texas was arrested by the police for sending child porn to a friend email. This isn't something we'd usually report on, except in this case the man was arrested due to a direct tip-off from Google, which caught the child porn moving across its Gmail servers and dutifully alerted the police. This raises a rather thorny question: How did Google scan the man's inbox for child porn? And more importantly, does this mean Google is scanning everyone's inbox for child porn and other illegal materials?
