Nokia unveils 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 smartphone

(Telecompaper) Nokia announced the new Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone, available first from the US carrier AT&T from 26 July. The Windows smartphone with LTE and advanced camera features will cost USD 299.99 with a two-year contract and come in black, white and yellow versions. Customers can pre-order beginning 16 July. The phone will launch later this quarter in China and Europe, and Telefonica will distribute an exclusive version of the phone in select European and Latin American markets. The Lumia 1020 features a 41 megapixel sensor, which Nokia claims is the largest back side illuminated (BSI) sensor available on a smartphone. Other imaging features include optical image stabilisation, Zeiss optics with a 6-lens design, manual shutter, xenon flash and HD video recording at 1080p at 30 fps with up to 4x zoom. It also comes with pre-installed tutorials on how to take better pictures and access to the online Nokia Photo Masters class. In addition to a range of editing features, the phone automatically makes a 5 megapixel version of each photo to facilitate easy sending. The 4.5-inch Amoled PureMotion HD+ display (1280x768 pixels) is made with Gorilla Glass 3, and the phone comes with 32GB internal storage. In addition it will be the first Windows phone to include AT&T Locker, the operator's free cloud storage app. For a limited time, customers who purchase a Nokia Lumia 1020 can get 50 GB of free cloud storage. The phone will be sold with an attachable leather wrist strap, and the Nokia Camera Grip accessory can be purchased separately, offering extra battery power, shutter button and a universal tripod mount.

Nokia Piles Eggs in Its Smartphone Camera Basket

Nokia is expected to bring its monster 41-megapixel camera sensor to its line of Windows Phone 8 handsets Thursday at its "Zoom Reinvented" event in New York City. Nokia's 808 PureView technology has been in one of its phones for a while with little notice given to it, but the company apparently hopes that will change with the expected introduction of a new flagship WP8 handset, the Lumia 1020.
