The report indicates that Samsung has been stabilising its tablet shipments over the last couple of quarters and could regain some Android customers in view of Huawei's trade difficulties outside China.

The fall to 310.8 million units is a clear sign that 2019 will be another down year for worldwide smartphone shipments, predicted the researcher, with Huawei and Vivo the only two vendors currently bucking market trends after posting strong year on year rises of 50.3 percent and 24.0 percent respectively.

According to Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments will reach a modest 5 million units in 2019. Early 5G smartphone models will be expensive and available in limited volumes. Samsung, LG and Huawei will be the early 5G smartphone leaders this year, followed by Apple next year.
