Samsung settles Apple patent suit for USD 548 mln

(Telecompaper) Samsung has agreed to settle for USD 548 million a 2011 smartphone patent suit in which Apple claimed USD 2.5 billion in damages, according to a joint statement filed to the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The New York Times writes that Apple won the case in 2012, but was awarded only around USD 1 billion. In making the payment, Samsung is complying with a partial judgement handed down in September in Apple's favour.

Nippon Steel to buy 1.8-2.6 mln T/year of iron ore from India

Dec 4 Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp , Japan's biggest steelmaker, said on Friday it had renewed a contract to buy 1.8-2.6 million tonnes of iron ore annually from India's state-owned Metals & Minerals Trading Corp over three years. The deal follows the approval by India's cabinet in June to renew a long-term contract between MMTC and Japanese steelmakers for the supply of high-grade iron ore, despite growing pressure in India to use its natural resources to meet domestic needs.

Motorola buys Airwave for GBP 817.5 mln

(Telecompaper) Motorola Solutions has agreed to acquire Airwave for GBP 817.5 million (around USD 1.2 billion). Formed in 2000, Airwave is headquartered in Berkshire, England, with about 600 employees. The company is owned by investment fund Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 2, which supports the transaction. The company delivers mission-critical voice and data communications to more than 300 emergency and public service agencies in the UK. Based on Tetra technology provided by Motorola Solutions, its network covers 99 percent of the UK's territory.

World Bank launches $500 mln carbon market scheme

Reuters: The World Bank on Monday launched a $500 million market-based scheme designed to help developing countries pay for emission reductions and combat climate change.
