Further environmental testing on city right-of-ways in Houghton Plot is expected to begin the week of Dec. 15. The Corning City Council recently voted to allow Corning Inc. to do additional environmental testing to gauge if and where soil remediation is needed. Seven additional soil samples will be taken in two areas of the northwest corner of the study area, said Joe Dunning, a Corning Inc. spokesman.

Weston Solutions has been contracted by Corning Inc., under the direction of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, to conduct the study of a suspected former industrial waste dump site. DEC officials have said they contacted Corning Inc. to conduct the study because historical documentation indicates the company has some responsibility for what might be found there.
