Evidence of large volcanic activity in the Caribbean uncovered
2016-01-14 13:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld
[NEWS] Scientists from the University of Southampton have uncovered evidence of a previously unknown large volcanic eruption in the Caribbean Sea. By studying ash layers, known as tephras, in marine sediments they identified an eruption that took place on Guadeloupe 2.4 million years ago. The research, published in the journal Geology, indicates this eruption is the largest documented volcanic event in the region since that time. Lead author, Professor Martin…

Overwhelming evidence of human-driven Anthropocene
2016-01-08 15:54:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bonham Journal: Additionally, human farming and fishing have brought about "transglobal species invasions...permanently reconfiguring Earth's biological trajectory". Study's lead researcher Colin Waters from the British Geological Survey said that the paper unveils about the big changes and as massive as the ones happened at the end of the last ice age. That is why, the Anthropocene Working Group believe that we have moved on into a new era, the Anthropocene Epoch. One of the factors considered is climate...

Portable NIST Kit can recover traces of chemical evidence.
2016-01-08 14:31:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
A chemist at NIST has developed a portable version of his method for recovering trace chemicals such as environmental pollutants and forensic evidence including secret graves and arson fire debris. If successfully commercialized by industry, briefcase-sized kit could enable detectives, field inspectors, and others to carry with them a convenient version of NIST’s "headspace analysis" technique, which identifies solid or liquid compounds based on the makeup of vapors released into nearby air.

The Anthropocene: Hard evidence a human-driven Earth
2016-01-08 00:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: The evidence for a new geological epoch which marks the impact of human activity on Earth is now overwhelming according to a recent paper by an international group of geoscientists. The Anthropocene, which is argued to start in the mid-20th Century, is marked by the spread of materials such as aluminium, concrete, plastic, fly ash and fallout from nuclear testing across the planet, coincident with elevated greenhouse gas emissions and unprecedented trans-global species invasions. An international...
