The third in a series of four simulated missions to Mars planned by NASA kicked off last week at a remote site on the Hawaiian island of Mauna Loa. A six-person team, comprising the Hawai'i Space Exploration Analog and Simulation 3 mission, is inhabiting a dome for an eight-month study of the human factors that contribute to astronaut crew function and performance over time.

Sunny skies returned to the Aloha State, the day after a hurricane left Hawaii without inflicting much harm beyond heavy rain. While the main Hawaiian islands rode out the storm with no reports of any serious problems, the National Weather Service said Tropical Strom Ana has set her sights on small, remote islands that make up what's known as the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

A hurricane churning past Hawaii will bring heavy rain, strong winds and severe surf conditions to the Pacific archipelago through the weekend but will not make a direct hit on the islands, the National Weather Service predicted on Saturday. Hurricane Ana was carving a path across the Pacific Ocean roughly parallel with the Hawaiian islands and its eye was expected to pass about 150 miles to the south of Honolulu on Saturday, according to forecasters.
