General Electric Co plans to cut 330 jobs in Texas in its oil and gas division, as it grapples with pressure on the unit from the drop in oil prices. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, the nation's fifth-biggest lender, is cutting about 500 jobs companywide even as it plans to add positions throughout the year, according to a person briefed on the matter. “These reductions reflect an overall alignment of our resources that allows us to better serve our clients and ensure that we are operating efficiently,” the Toronto-based bank said Thursday in an e-mailed statement that didn't elaborate on which jobs and how many are affected.

Sony to cut 1,000 jobs at smartphone business - report

(Telecompaper) Sony plans to eliminate another 1,000 jobs in its smartphone operations, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. The new cuts will reduce staff in the division to about 5,000 after including 1,000 job losses previously announced by the company. The cuts will affect Sony's operations in China, the UK and Sweden, the report said. CFO Kenichiro Yoshida is ending the development of new smartphones for China and is culling the number of Xperia models. The additional cuts are needed to reach the company's goal of reducing operating costs in the business by 30 percent by March 2017. Sony declined to comment on the report.

Another Canadian energy company has fallen victim to the plunging global crude oil prices. Suncor Energy Inc., Canada's biggest energy company, has announced on Tuesday it will be laying off 1.000 jobs as it slashes some $1 billion from its spending budget earmarked for 2015.
