Great Lakes steamboat docks in Buffalo; restoration planned

An old Great Lakes steamboat that operated as a passenger ferry for decades is now temporarily berthed in Buffalo while en route to New York City for restoration. The SS Columbia arrived last week in western New York, where it will remain docked at Silo City on Buffalo's Lake Erie waterfront for the next year.

A growing regional economy and strong demand for automobiles are among the reasons it should be a record year on the docks in the Charleston area, the chief of the South Carolina Ports Authority says. The authority had its best year ever in fiscal 2006, before the Great Recession set in, when more than 1.13 million shipping containers were moved through the Port of Charleston's three terminals.
