Climate Central: It's official: Antarctic sea ice hit its annual winter maximum on Sept. 22, reaching a record area of 7.76 million square miles, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) announced Tuesday. Antarctic sea ice extent for Sept. 22, 2014 was 7.76 million square miles. The orange line in the figure shows the 1981-2010 average extent for that day, and the black cross indicates the geographic South Pole. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, dropped a bomb at the Paris auto show last week, and it landed 4,000 miles west on Toledo, Ohio.
