Earths magnetic field could flip within our lifetime but dont worry, we should be OK
2014-10-21 21:08:15| Extremetech
This summer, the European Space Agency published data that suggested that the Earth's magnetic field could flip -- as in, the magnetic north pole becomes the magnetic south pole -- in 'a few thousand years.' At the time, I figured there was no rush to write it up -- after all, we might not even be living on Earth in a few thousand years. Now, however, new research published this week shows that the magnetic field might flip within our lifetime -- so it's probably something that we ought to talk about.

Study on global carbon cycle may require reappraisal of climate events in Earth's history
2014-09-17 07:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: A recent study of the global carbon cycle offers a new perspective of Earth's climate records through time. Scientists at the University of Miami (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science suggest that one of the current methods for interpreting ancient changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and oceans may need to be re-evaluated. The UM Rosenstiel School researchers measured the abundance of carbon-12 and carbon-13 isotopes in both the organic matter and...

United Kingdom: Friends of the Earth's shift on nuclear should be celebrated, not denied

Guardian: Nuclear power in the UK has turned out much safer than environmentalists worried it would be. Friends of the Earth, which feared the threat of a catastrophic Chernobyl-style meltdown in the UK, is now less concerned. Fear of nuclear armageddon was a driving force for the green movement in the UK Greenpeace has its name for a reason. But Friends of the Earth have revealed that their old ideological opposition to nuclear has crumbled, to be replaced by a new pragmatic opposition based on cost...

Can Humans Get Used to Having a Two-Way Relationship with Earths Climate?

New York Times: Earlier this summer, I was invited to write an essay on humanitys troubled relationship with the changing atmosphere for a special issue of Audubon Magazine centered on the Audubon Societys comprehensive new report on birds in a changing climate. The issue is now published online and in print and has a range of excellent features, including How Climate Change is Sinking Seabirds by Carl Safina, Why U.S. Forests Are Fueling Europe by T. Edward NIckens, Rethinking How We Think about Climate...
