Wireless technology may offer a number of great advantages in terms of ease of use and convenience, but a new study conducted by NTCA and Vantage Point Solutions reveals that wireless technologies are a complement rather than a replacement. In its new study called " Wireless Broadband Not a Viable Substitute for Wireline Broadband " that was filed with the FCC, Vantage Point examined various broadband delivery networks and found that there are a number of factors, including a lack of spectrum, weather and terrain, which limit a wireless network's broadband quality but do not affect wireline-based broadband networks.

Verizon confirms wireline, tower sales for USD 15 bln

(Telecompaper) Verizon Communications has confirmed plans to sell part of its wireline assets to Frontier Communications for USD 10.54 billion. Frontier will acquire the local wireline operations serving customers in California, Florida and Texas for USD 9.9 billion in cash and USD 600 million in assumed debt. In addition, Verizon has agreed to lease the rights to over 11,300 of its wireless towers to American Tower Corporation, which will also purchase approximately 165 Verizon towers, for a total upfront payment of USD 5 billion. Part of the proceeds of the sales will be returned to shareholders in the form of a USD 5 billion accelerated share-repurchase programme.

Verizon Communications will make almost $15 billion from selling part of its wireline business and leasing thousands of wireless towers. The largest U.S. cellphone carrier is selling its California, Florida and Texas wireline businesses, which serve phone, TV and Internet customers, to Frontier Communications Corp. for $9.9 billion in cash.

(Telecompaper) Verizon is close to selling a package of assets including mobile towers and parts of its wireline business. The deals could be worth more than USD 15 billion, which Verizon would use to pay off debt and finance its recent spectrum purchases, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. The deals will involve different buyers and could be announced as soon as later this week. CEO Lowell McAdam said in January that the company was open to selling assets that would reduce its wireline footprint.
