The fastest camera ever created will be used to study invisibility cloaks
2015-01-22 13:32:50| Extremetech
Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis have now modified the standard 1-dimensional streak camera so that it can record 2-dimensional single-shot images without any illumination -- all at the astounding rate of 100 billion frames per second.

Japan: Fukushima and institutional invisibility of nuclear disaster
2014-12-20 19:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Ecologist: The nuclear industry and its supporters have contrived a variety of narratives to justify and explain away nuclear catastrophes, writes John Downer. None of them actually hold water, yet they serve their purpose - to command political and media heights, and reassure public sentiment on 'safety'. But if it's so safe, why the low limits on nuclear liabilities? In a truly competitive marketplace, unfettered by subsidies, no one would have built a nuclear reactor in the past, no one would build one...

The first three-dimensional visible light invisibility cloak
2014-09-29 17:07:11| Extremetech
Researchers at the University of Rochester are reporting that they've built the first invisibility cloak that works in three dimensions, viewed from a range of angles, across the full spectral range of visible light. As you can see in the photo above, and in the video below, the invisibility effect is rather effective -- and, importantly, it creates very little "telltale" distortion that usually accompanies such early attempts at cloaking (the grid lines are perfectly straight and not magnified/minimized). Best of all, though: You can make this particular kind of invisibility cloak yourself!

Sewing an invisibility cloak with a needle made of light
2014-07-29 17:32:59| Extremetech
Needles made of lasers are being used at the University of Cambridge to assemble nanoparticles into larger segments that could one day be used to make an honest-to-goodness cloaking device.
