G7 Set for Critical Climate Talks as Paris Summit Looms
2015-06-05 14:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
RTCC: Climate change is seen a primary focus for the Group of Seven when leaders gather in an idyllic fortress in Bavaria this weekend. Russia`s annexing of Crimea kicked environment down the agenda in 2014, as members expelled it from the forum of major industrialised nations. Though in the midst of UN talks in Bonn a year on, and with a global warming pact to be signed off in December, climate will feature as Germany`s Angela Merkel chairs talks in the Schloss Elmau castle. In an interview with...

Global CO2 pricing seen unlikely to be big part of Paris climate deal
2015-06-03 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: A global carbon emissions pricing system pushed by top energy companies is unlikely to be a big part of any United Nations' deal to curb global warming, some experts say, because many countries have little faith in such cross-border initiatives. "All countries are relatively sceptical on international market mechanisms," said Niklas Hoehne, founding partner of research group NewClimate Institute. "They are open to have national trading mechanisms or national pricing, but to have these mechanisms...
Facebook to open AI lab in Paris
2015-06-02 17:50:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Facebook has announced plans to open its first artificial intelligence (AI) lab outside the US. The new lab in Paris, France, will start with six research scientists, growing to 12 by year-end. CTO Mike Schorepfer told BBC News that the AI work being done in industry complements the work being done by academic researchers and that the company's work in AI research is still relatively early. Facebook's head of AI research, Yann LeCun, said there is no need to worry about reported risks of AI in the short term. "We have a long way to go to make machines as intelligent as we'd like them to be, and there are technical hurdles that we don't yet know how to solve. Human-level AI is very far down the line. It will be several decades," enough time "to talk about the ethics." LeCun added that Paris was chosen for its high concentration of AI researchers. Facebook's AI lab in the US opened in December 2013 and now employs over 40 researchers.
