Belgium-based chemicals company Solvay SA said Wednesday it is buying its U.S. counterpart Cytec Industries Inc. for $5.5 billion, or $75.25 per share, and will hold a 1.5 billion euro capital increase to finance the sale.

Cytec Industries Inc. of Woodland Park dropped the most in more than three years as the world's second-largest maker of carbon-fiber materials for airplanes was hit by lower demand and unfavorable exchange rates. The shares fell 5.4 percent to $57.15 at 11:46 a.m. in New York after earlier slumping 6.9 percent, the biggest intraday drop since May 17, 2012.

Credit Suisse's increased price target reflects analysts' expectations for stable near-term fundamentals as well as a slightly improved long-term outlook following the firm's time with management, the firm noted. "Management indicated that despite falling copper prices, it has not seen any pressure in the IPS business, which is in line with the historical patterns," analysts said, adding that aerospace remains largely on track, as does industrial materials.
