Statoil announces it will exit US Arctic petroleum leases off Alaska's northwest coast

Another major oil company is abandoning its plans to drill in the Arctic Ocean off the northwest coast of Alaska. The Norwegian company is also abandoning its stake in 50 Chukchi leases operated by ConocoPhillips.

Legislative consultants: Pipeline buyout decision unlikely to affect Alaska's finances

The Alaska Legislature's oil and gas consultants said in a report released Sunday that the buyout decision facing lawmakers at their special session here is unlikely to have a significant effect on the state's finances. The administration of Gov. Bill Walker is asking lawmakers to approve spending $150 million to increase the state's share in the natural gas pipeline megaproject it's pursuing with three oil companies.

Washington Post: Hundreds of wildfires are continually whipping across this state this summer, leaving in their wake millions of acres of charred trees and blackened earth. At the Fairbanks compound of the states Division of Forestry recently, workers were busy washing a mountain of soot-covered fire hoses, which stood in piles roughly six feet high and 100?feet long.
