Climate forecast for Australia: hot days, higher fire risk, more severe droughts
2014-03-04 00:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Australias temperature will continue to warm leading to decreases in rainfall in southern Australia, increasing numbers of hot days and higher fire risks and more severe drought conditions, according to the 2014 State of the Climate report. The report is a joint undertaking by the CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology, and found that Australias temperature is predicted to rise by 0.6C to 1.5C by 2030; in comparison, between 1910 and 1990 the temperature rose by 0.6C.

What the West's Ancient Droughts Say About Its Future
2014-02-14 19:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
National Geographic: A millennium agojust yesterday, in geologic timeNative Americans waited all winter for rains that never came. They waited the next winter and the next. Then the marshes of their sacred San Francisco Bay turned from cattails to salt grass. Fishing declined and the Native Americans could no longer rely on the bounty of the bay. Finally, they left, hungry and thirsty, in search of water. Now, as modern Californians hope for fierce storms to break a dangerous dry spell, the questions arise: Is the...

Natural sponges: forests help moderate floods, droughts
2013-12-20 02:54:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mongabay: A new study adds further evidence for the "sponge effect" of forests. Research published in the journal Water Resources Research by scientists at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) and other institutions finds that forests in Panama help moderate extreme weather events by reducing peak runoff during storms and releasing stored water during droughts. The findings are based on measurements taken during nearly 450 tropical storms in forests and pastures. We measured large differences...

'Whole world at risk' from simultaneous droughts, famines, epidemics: scientists
2013-12-17 15:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: An international scientific research project known as the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISI-MIP), run by 30 teams from 12 countries, has attempted to understand the severity and scale of global impacts of climate change. The project compares model projections on water scarcity, crop yields, disease, floods among other issues to see how they could interact. The series of papers published by the Proceedings for the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) shows that policymakers...

Amazon deforestation could cause droughts in California
2013-11-08 21:34:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mongabay: Complete deforestation of the Amazon rainforest could reduce rainfall in the Pacific Northwest by up to 20 percent and snowpack in the Sierra Nevada by up to 50 percent, suggests new research published in the Journal of Climate. The study is based on high resolution computer modeling that stripped the Amazon of its forest cover and assessed the potential impact on wind and precipitation patterns. While the scenario is implausible, it reveals the global nature of the ecological services afforded...
