Global Warming Will Make Toxic Algae Blooms Worse

2014-08-11 06:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Columbus Dispatch: Scientists say climate change is exacerbating toxic-algae problems in Lake Erie and across the country. They say more-intense storms are dumping heavy rains onto farm fields, causing more fertilizer runoff than in the past, and that lake-water temperatures are rising, making a perfect home for the toxic blue-green algae that plague Lake Erie every summer and caused Toledos recent drinking-water woes. When you have a gentle rain, where you get maybe an inch ... over a 24-hour period, you dont...

Toxic Algae Contaminates Toledo Water

Environment News Service: More than 400,000 residents of Toledo, Ohio`s fourth largest city, are without water following the detection of the toxin Microcystin in the public water system, caused by an algal bloom in the area. On Saturday, Governor John Kasich, a Republican, declared a state of emergency for Lucas County, where Toledo is located, and neighboring Wood and Fulton counties. Slimy toxic algae will hit Lake Erie again this summer

2014-07-11 15:08:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

LiveScience: This is the third year the agency has forecast the amount of toxic slime that would choke Lake Erie during the late summer. The forecast is based on models of fertilizer runoff and satellite tracking of precipitation and snowmelt. The noxious blooms occur when fertilizer runoff feeds the runaway growth of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. The algae are harmful to marine life and to humans. Decaying cyanobacteria suck up oxygen, creating dead zones. Some kinds of algae also emit toxins that damage...

Northwest researcher says toxic algae have a competitive edge

2013-10-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

OPB: Pollution and climate change may be making freshwater algae blooms more toxic, according to a Northwest scientist`s newly published analysis. Oregon State University researcher Tim Otten`s article in the journal Science concludes that fertilizer pollution, wastewater, and a warming climate are fueling the growth of huge mats of green scum in lakes and reservoirs. For instance in Lake Erie, its been plagued with toxic blooms that are so large you can see them from outer space, he said. Algae...
