The man who has been at the forefront of Utah Gov. Gary Herbert's environmental hot spots on air quality, water conservation and public lands squabbles will now step into a regulatory role as head of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. Herbert announced Monday that Alan Matheson will take over the post from Amanda Smith, an attorney who is stepping down May 22 after six years to pursue other professional opportunities.
