Microsoft posts record revenue, profits due to strong Xbox, Windows Phone, and enterprise sales
2014-01-24 15:22:29| Extremetech
Appearances can be deceiving: Despite its outwardly flailing demeanor, Microsoft has just announced record revenue and profits for Q2 2014 (calendar Q4 2013). On the back of strong Xbox One and 360 sales, and good growth by its commercial licensing divisions, Microsoft managed to bring in $24.5 billion in revenue and $8 billion profit. While Windows remained strong in the commercial/business sector, the consumer sector continues to see reduced demand (and thus revenue and profits. Microsoft continues to obfuscate the actual number of Surface tablets sold, but it did say that revenue and units sold doubled in the last quarter -- but sadly, so did the costs of selling those devices. Surface, for the second year running, is still a loss maker.
Nokias Android smartphone looks a lot like Windows Phone, should be released in 2014

New photos of Nokia's upcoming Android handset, code named Normandy, have leaked -- and rather oddly, it appears the standard Android UI has been stripped out and replaced with something that looks a bit like Windows Phone. In a separate leak, it would appear that the Normandy hardware design, which looks almost identical to a Nokia Lumia handset, is near-final. It would seem that, despite the imminent finalization of Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia, this rather odd device is still on schedule to be released this year.
Windows Phone 8.0 is upgradeable to 8.1, Microsoft says

Windows Phone 8.1, expected to launch in the spring, will be backwards compatible to Windows Phone 8.0, contrary to some earlier reports from industry sources, a Microsoft official told Computerworld today. That means that smartphones running Windows Phone 8.0 will be able to run the updated version, assuming that the user's wireless carrier has distributed the 8.1 update to its customers.
