This position, based near Frankfurt in Germany, is for a consultant to support the operations and service enhancements of our clients multimission Data Centre. The client is an intergovernmental organisation responsible for supplying weather and climate related satellite data 24x7 to National Meteorological bodies. The data centre is a large facility which provides longterm preservation of all satellite data and generated products derived from past, present and future missions. The consultant will work within the Data Centre Operations team which is responsible for operating the Data Centre and handling all the userrelated activities. Monitoring, configuring, testing and reporting of Data Centre usage, coordination of engineering and maintenance activities with the users, driving Data Centre enhancements based on user feedback, working on Archive data visualisation and prototyping of relevant data services. The key experience and skills sought are Working in an operations environment supporting the analysis of system and user support issues. Experience with working with Earth Observation data, and their visualisation and processing. Experience in designing and developing software components and applications in an operational and web environment. Programming experience in CC, Java languages, UNIX environment, scripting in Shell and Perl. Extensive knowledge for specification, validation and transformation using XMLXSDXLT and their associated tools. Experience of handling and manipulating binary data. Good knowledge of the testing process for a complex hardware and software system. Practical knowledge of the following will be a distinct advantage Experience with Meteorological data formats such as NetCDF, HDF, BUFR, GRIB. Good knowledge of standards, conventions and guidelines for the specification of metadata for Earth Observation data. Experience with using tools such as IDV, McIDASV, IDL, THREDDS. Experience in geospatial data formats such as GeoTiff, McIDAS. Knowledge of the SubVersion source code control systems. Knowledge of Software Development Environments such as the Eclipse. Knowledge of Google Web Toolkit GWT Development and usage experience in Big Data Technologies such as Hadoop. The working language is English. PROFILE The key person is required to have A university degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline Experience in engineering of large, complex, realtime data processing systems, including requirements specification, design, software maintenance or development, formal software testing and system integration Experience in operating or maintaining software systems in a UNIX or LINUX based environment Experience in software build environments and tools e.g. IBM XL C and GCC compilers, make, automake, autoconf, RPM Experience in software debugging and profiling tools e.g. GDB, IBM Purify, Valgrind Experience with source code control systems e.g. primarily Subversion, Git Experience in CC programming language experience in a UNIX or LINUX based environment Experience with scripting languages e.g. Perl, shell Experience with analysis and processing of softwaregenerated reports and logfiles Experience with web technologies and programming e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript Experience with networking technologies and tools e.g. Space Data Link Protocols, TCPIP, UDP multicast, PGM, FTP, Wireshark Very good technical writing skills, in particular in the area of formal technical documentation, e.g. requirements specification and design documentation, test plans and procedures, maintenance procedures Fluency in English. For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently looking for a Data Processing Systems Applications Engineer. Tasks and Responsibilities The core task of the Key Person, as a member of the Processing Applications Engineering PAE Team within the SEP DPSA CA, shall be to support the maintenance and evolution of the EPS and MSG data processing facilities, in particular the EPS FEPPGF and the MSG IMPF. The Key Person shall also provide support to the maintenance and evolution of the IDRS facility and the NRT processing centre of SARAL, and may also be assigned to similar tasks in the context of any other activity within the scope of the DPSA CA. The Key Person duties will include a range of tasks, from the support of the day to day operations and maintenance, to the handling of anomalies, upgrades and configuration changes for these facilities. Tasks will also contain the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures. For procurements and maintenance services provided externally, the Key Person shall provide support to the management of the technical interface with the external contractors. Besides the above described routine tasks, the Key Person will also be expected to contribute to requirements specification, design and system engineeringreengineering, development and testing activities in the field of science data processing that will become necessary for existing and future production systems. In support to operations, the Key Person may also be required to provide on call support during special activities for limited periods of time e.g. short periods during spacecraft commissioninglaunch phases as part of a team of maintenance engineers. The Key Person shall have a systematic approach to work, should possess very good communication, presentation and team working skills, be able to plan hisher work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. The ability to adapt to a rapidly changing, often stressful systemsenvironments and retain a system overview is also essential. The consultant shall have a solid system engineering understanding, and the ability to manage the technical interface with external contractors.
