We are looking to further enhance our team by Applications Engineering Consultancy support You will be based initially for 2 years at our clients headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Extension of a further 2 years may be possible. In this large European Agency you will find an excellent and modern working environment with challenging tasks and responsibilities. Your Tasks Include As a member of the SEP Data Processing System Applications and Tools Group and in particular the Supporting Applications Engineering team, the Key Person shall support the maintenance and evolution of off line Ground Segment elements, specifically for quality control, calibration and validation, data visualisation and auxiliary data management and services. The application software is mainly developed in CC, PERL, and Python. For data visualisation a good knowledge in IDL and ENVI is required. The Key Persons duties will include a range of tasks, from the support of the day to day operation and maintenance, the analysis, design, development and testing of the facilities which also includes the handling of anomalies, upgrades and configuration changes for these facilities. The Key Person will be the focal point when it comes to integrating each individual Facilities into a system context, covering all aspects from early SW development, definition of interfaces, system integration and testing, and end to end testing of the production system. Tasks will also contain the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures as well as the coordination with external providers of maintenance services. In support to operations, the Key Person may also be required to provide on call support as part of a team of maintenance engineers. Besides the above described routine tasks, the Key Person will also be expected to contribute to design and system engineeringreengineering activities in the area of expertise for existing and future production systems. Candidate areas are programmes such as, MTG, EPSSG, Jason, Saral, EARS, Sentinel 3, etc. Typically tasks will include 1. Contribute to the definition, design, implementation and maintenance of architectures for data processing ground segments and their components with special emphasis on product quality control, calibration and validation, production monitoring and reporting. 2. Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution. This will also include Upgrade software, including implementing and maintaining new algorithms for product quality control and calibrationvalidation activities. 3. Perform routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control such as o Support the Configuration Management process and the building and distribution of software releases and patches o Support to the development, integration and configuration management of software developed by third parties, its installation, and configuration and testing o Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification. o Follow up of the delivery of SW resolutions for these anomalies 4. Perform standard SW engineering activities such as o SW testing in a structured approach to verify that delivered SW is fulfilling the requirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected. o SW integration and verification in the Client ground segments 5. Settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, 6. Support to the procurement and installation of software, and the coordination with external providers of support services 7. Participation in meetings and formal reviews. Your Profile In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Key Person shall have experience in system design, SW development, operation, maintenance and trouble shooting of large complex realtime data processing systems for meteorological satellites. The Key Person should possess very good communication, presentation and team working skills and be able to cope with very high workloads. An ability to adapt to a rapidly changing, often stressful environment and retain a system overview is also essential. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the following areas is mandatory Experience of operating and maintaining software systems in a UNIX based environment specifically LINUX and AIX CC programming language experience in a UNIX based environment Use of and application programming of database systems in particular ORACLE, INFORMIX, PostgreSQL and MySQL Competence in the use of scripting languages e.g., shell scripting and highlevel languages e.g., Python, Java Knowledge of web technologies, programming and markup languages e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript, UML Competence in SW testing, unit test suite maintenance, automated testing, verification and validation. Practical knowledge of as many as possible of the following areas will be an advantage Experience in system design for quality control and calval systems Experience with operational Earth Observation science data processing Data visualisation tools, e.g. IDL, ENVI Familiarity with data formats used for meteorological satellite products Experience in using Python libraries and tools, such as Matplotlib, NumPy, Django and accessing sql databases from Python Knowledge of relevant Standards, Quality Assurance and Configuration Management principles and applications Very good technical writing skills, in particular in the area of formal technical documentation, e.g. design documentation, test procedures, maintenance procedures Competence in the exploitation of modern hardware and operating systems at the application level e.g., multithreading, parallel programming e.g. MPI, OpenMP, virtualization Competence in objectoriented software design and implementation in the context of satellite instrument data processing systems.

Your Tasks Include The Consultant will carry out tasks which support activities related to initially Phase B followed by phases CD of the EPSSG Programme in the area of ground segment engineering. In this context attention is drawn to the mandatory nature of the programme. In detail, support will be provided for the following tasks Support to the definition of data processing concepts and their implications on Ground Segment interfaces and architecture, analysis of requirements and constraints imposed on Ground Segment data processing elements, including their impact and criticality, specification and maintenance of Ground Segment and lower level requirements in DOORS with associated traceability and verification methods, including the development of testing concepts and test scenarios, and justification of requirements to be documented in the Ground Segment Design Justification File Maintenance of the functional and architectural model of Ground Segment data processing elements with the selected Model Based System Engineering MBSE methodology and contribution to the Ground Segment preliminary design definition to be documented in the Ground Segment Architectural Design Document and contribution to the Ground Segment Integration, Verification and Validation IVV approach definition for data processing elements, and specification of Interface Requirements Documents IRDs Performance of tradeoffs to assess effectiveness, risks and costs of alternative architectural and technical solutions in the area of data processing and support to the compilation and maintenance of data processing engineering budgets such as data and products volumes, products generation timeliness Support to the procurement of Ground Segment data processing elements by advising on technical solutions proposed by the contractor and by reviewing documentation to confirm its compliance with the requirements, along with support to testing, integration and acceptance of Ground Segment data processing elements by reviewing testing documentation, managing procurement of test data where appropriate and evaluating coherence and adequacy of integration and system level tests. Support to anomaly maintenance and evolutions For maintenance, characterisation of system component behaviour against required performance, maintenance of a systematic overview of anomaly contexts, and proposal and implementation of system alterations including component modification to achieve required performance for evolutions, conceptual design, requirements specification, functional modelling, system analysis, and concept development to support increased performance, rationalisation of components, and cost reduction, along with monitoring and supporting the implementation of evolutions, and documenting the resulting revised relationships between component clusters, functional models, and requirements. In addition, there will be regular involvement in the following tasks requiring interaction and coordination with other teams at System and Ground Segment level Review of System, Space Segment and Ground Segment documentation dealing with requirements, concepts, algorithms and technical analyses of relevance for data processing, including review of instrument data processing algorithms and calibration concepts defined by the Space Segment with emphasis on their implications on Ground Segment data processing concepts, interfaces and architecture Participation in formal reviews and technical meetings at System and Ground Segment level. Review of documentation dealing with technical evolutions of the Client infrastructure The performance of these tasks shall comply with the Client organisational and divisional rules, management standards and working practices. The set of applicable rules and working practices will be made available at start of the duties. Your Profile Mandatory Skills and Experience In addition to having a University degree in the engineering domain or equivalent the key persons shall have the following mandatory skills and experience At least 3 years of experience in engineering of Ground Segment data processing elements for Earth Observation missions, including requirements specification, definition of interfaces, architecture and testing concepts At least 3 years of direct involvement in specification, design, development andor procurement of at least two of the following Ground Segment elements Processing infrastructure for Level 1 and Level 2 data processing Level 1 instrument data processors Frontend and L0 processing The key persons shall be willing to work within a multidisciplinary and dynamic context in cooperation with other teams. The ability to maintain a system overview is essential. They shall have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan their work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. They shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. The working language for the position is English and therefore they must be able to work effectively in this language. Desirable Skills and Experience Previous experience and knowledge in any of the following areas will be considered an additional asset Requirements management in DOORS Experience with formal system architectural modelling and design tools Knowledge of ECSS and CCSDS standards Knowledge of Calibration Validation activities for Earth Observation products Experience in specification, development andor procurement of instrument test data and processor prototypes for Earth Observation missions.
