Optical Instrument Engineer 1513021 Job Description We are looking for an Optical Instrument Engineer to support our client EUMETSAT at their headquarters in Darmstadt. You will be working within Low Earth Orbit LEO Instrument Team and will be responsible, inter alia, to follow activities relevant to the EUMETSAT Polar System EPS instruments, such as monitoring instrument performance during ground tests, systemlevel tests and satellite commissioning, up to routine operations. You will be in charge of following all activities relevant to the instruments IASI, which is a Michelson interferometer operating in the Infrared spectra, between 3.6 to 15.5 m and GOME, which contributes to atmospheric chemistry providing absorption spectra from 240nm UV to 790nm SWIR with moderate spectral resolution. In particular responsible for integration, testing and operation on EUMETSAT satellites, both onground and inorbit, including the resolution of instrument anomalies. You will be the focal point for IASI and GOME with respect to EUMETSAT partners, such as CNES and ESA. Tasks include Monitoring of the repair and subsequent tests of IASI. Monitor and support the GOME2 on ground calibration. Participation to Metop satellite AIV, Launch and Commissioning activities relevant to both IASI and GOME2. Participation to instrument acceptance and handover reviews and other meetings with industry and other partners such as ESA, CNES as well as internal meetings. Analyse and assess the onground and inorbit performances of IASI and GOME2. Maintenance of an uptodate plan of Metop satellite AIV, Launch and Commissioning activities requiring support for the IASI and GOME2 instruments. Investigation of onground and inorbit instrument anomalies and support operations to the relevant recovery actions. Provide general support to the Metop Operations Team for IASI and GOME 2 matters. Support inorbit checkout verification tests during MetopC In Orbit Verification IOV. Preparation and maintenance of instrument related documents, as well as presentation material Maintenance of regular contacts with the above mentioned EUMETSAT partners in relation to IASI and GOME2. Required Skills and Experience You are required to have the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks with the minimum of supervision and minimum training. You will have a university degree in engineering or physics and a background of at least 5 years in space hardware projects mainly in the area of optical instruments. Experience in project management positions is required together with the ability to follow satellite level Payload AIV activities. knowledge of PAQA processes and procedures and good general computing skills, with familiarity with Microsoft Office software Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.. Previous experience in AIVAIT and commissioning activities is regarded as advantageous along with experience of working on a collaborative programme between different partners. You must be able to work effectively in English. DUTIES The postholder will report to the Head of the Optical Instruments Section and will be responsible for the definition, engineering, technology breadboarding and predevelopment of optical instruments for future Earth Observation Explorer and operational space missions, the latter including Eumetsat and Copernicus missions. The types of instrument developed in the Section include radiometers, multispectral imagers at various resolutions, spectrometers for ocean, land and atmosphere sensing and active laser instruments for surface and atmospheric sensing. The incumbent will be engaged in the study and predevelopment of one or several of these instrument types with a focus on passive optical instruments. The duties will include identification and investigation of new observation principles, techniques and technologies establishment of requirements, definition and assessment of the performance of new optical Earth observation instruments taking into account mission, system and programmatic requirements provision of expert support for the study of optical payload aspects of new satellites and missions definition, initiation and management of industrial contracts encompassing instrument concept and supporting studies and technical risk retirement of future spaceborne instruments through technology developments, component and subsystem breadboarding and the realisation of instrument demonstrators contribution to the preparation of technical and scientific dossiers on new Earth Explorer and operational missions maintenance of knowledge on relevant technology status and instrument development programmes inside and outside ESA. In the execution of the tasks, the postholder will work in close coordination with staff from Earth Observation project teams, from the Science, Applications and Future Technologies Department and from the Technical and Quality Management Directorate. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in engineering or physics and have a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in remotesensing optical instruments and associated development. Familiarity with optical remote sensing techniques and experience in hardware development and performance analysis models and tools are desirable. Candidates are expected to be able to contribute to a dynamic and creative environment in preparatory phases of satellite missions. Applicants should have good interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively within small teams as well as working autonomously. Experience in working in a project andor team environment is desirable. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required together with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of another member state language is an asset.
