U.S. EPA released Design for the Environment Alternatives Assessment draft report on alternatives to hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a flame retardant chemical that has persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic characteristics. Findings in report can help manufacturers identify safer alternatives to use of HBCD in polystyrene building insulation. In addition to identifying 2 viable chemical alternatives, report provides list of substances that are not currently expected to be viable.
