Payload Instruments Engineer

We are currently looking for a Payload Instruments Engineer to support our customer in the Netherlands. Payload Instruments Engineer Key Tasks and Responsibilities As part of the The Future Missions Office within the Science directorate, you will have the following responsibilities Monitor the implementation of the activities contained in the Cosmic Visions Technology Plan, solicit the required inputs from the respective Interface Technical Officers, maintain the associated implementation database, produce implementation status reports and presentations Assist in the planning and coordination of the implementation of the activities contained in the Cosmic Visions Technology Plan Provide support to the development of the technologies required for the future ESA science missions as defined in the Cosmic Visions Programme TDAs documentation preparation Statement of Work, technical requirements and technical followup Provide support to the technology planning and the production of Technology Development Plans for future missions, themes and systems Assist in the coordination of technology developments and planning across ESA and with external parties Contribute to the implementation of TDAs Support future mission assessment and advanced studies in areas related to advanced technologies Participate in technical reviews and working groups. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree in Engineering Physics A wide spectrum knowledge in engineering physics, with a natural inclination for understanding new technologies Several years of experience in the development of advanced technologies, preferably for space applications Knowledge of advanced optics, novel sensors and materials, power generation, thermal protection and cryogenics is required Experience in technology developments and the reporting on ongoing activities will form an important key service aspect Management experience with industrial contract exposure is an important asset Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage. We are looking to further enhance our team by Consultancy for MHS and NOAA Instruments Engineering Activities You will be based initially for 2 years at our clients headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Extension of a further 2 years may be possible. In this large European Agency you will find an excellent and modern working environment with challenging tasks and responsibilities. Your Tasks Support to MHS and NOAA Instruments Engineering Activities The Key person, the MHS and NOAA Instruments Engineer, will be responsible to follow up the instruments project and shall report to the LEO Instrument Team Leader. The tasks of the MHS and NOAA Instruments Engineer shall include the following Participation to Metop satellite AIV, Launch and Commissioning activities relevant to the MHS and NOAA instruments, including operation of the MHS EGSE, data analysis, preparation of procedures and test reports instrument ground testing at sc level, endtoend testing at system level, satellite inorbit verification. Maintenance of an uptodate plan of Metop satellite AIV, Launch and Commissioning activities requiring support for the MHS and the NOAA instruments. Follow up all activities related to MHS carried out by the Airbus DSUK and maintain a list of PDS activities and their status and expenditures. Follow up of all activities related to the NOAA instruments including AVHRR and SEM instruments onground calibration. Support inorbit checkout verification tests during MetopC In Orbit Verification IOV. Investigation of onground and inorbit instrument anomalies and support operations to the relevant recovery actions. Provide general support to the Metop Operations Team for MHS and NOAA instruments matters. Analyse and assess both onground and inorbit performances of MHS and NOAA instruments. Participation to instrument reviews and other meetings with industry and other partners such as ESA, NOAANASA. Maintenance of regular contacts with the above mentioned EUMETSAT partners and industry in relation to MHS and NOAA instruments. Maintenance of a status list of MHS action items, nonconformancesanomalies, requests for waivers and deviations. Preparation and maintenance of instrument related documents, as well as presentation material e.g. Instrument Operational Manuals Support to other Instruments Although support to MHS and NOAA instruments is the primary task of the Key person, heshe may be requested to provide a similar type of management and engineering support to the LEO Instrument Team Leader for other instruments. Your Profile The Key person is required to have the experience and capability to fulfil the assigned tasks with the minimum of supervision and minimum training. The Key person shall have a university degree in engineering or physics and, as a pre requisite, a background of at least 5 years in space hardware projects possibly with Earth observation instruments. Experience in project management positions is desirable together with the ability to follow satellite level Payload AIV activities. The Key person shall also have some knowledge of PAQA processes and procedures and good general computing skills, with familiarity with Microsoft Office software Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.. Previous experience in AIVAIT and commissioning activities is regarded as advantageous along with experience of working on a collaborative programme between different partners. The official languages are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the Key person must be able to work effectively in this language and have some knowledge of the other.
