Labor costs could stop rising this year in emerging economies where governments prefer preserving their comparative advantage, therefore supporting a slowing down economic growth. China is even giving signs that its minimum wages could be raised in a more flexible manner in the coming years. Our report displays minimum wages in a large number of apparel manufacturing countries, with latest data updated as of April 1st in US$ terms, compared with January 2015 and January 2014. Minimum wages in local currency units are also released for most countries.

Minimum wages are being increased in a series of Asian apparel manufacturing countries at the start of 2015. Effective implementatioin could however take time, as already observed in the last year in Bangladesh. Apparel exports could be negatively affected in countries like Cambodia, where the low labor costs are the sole advantage offered to domestic industry. In other countries like Vietnam, a new increase of minimum wages will not impact the fast development of sales to US and EU clothing markets.
