Global warming 'hiatus': Scientists duel over which ocean steals some heat
2014-08-21 20:27:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Christian Science Monitor: The deeper researchers dig into the dramatic slowdown in global warming during the past 15 years, the more their findings point to natural climate variability as the cause rather than any purported end to human-triggered climate change. The latest example of this conclusion comes from a pair of scientists from the United States and China trying to identify where the expected heat has been hiding. They attribute the slowdown in warming, as others do, to heat taken up by the world's oceans,...

Don't be fooled by pause in global warming caused by 30 year cycle in ocean currents warn scientists
2014-08-21 19:56:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Daily Kos: An apparent slowdown in global warming caused by a 30 year ocean cycle could lull people into a misperception that global warming has paused when it has not, reports Math McGrath of the BBC. During his phase of the cycle heat is being pulled deep into the Atlantic Ocean. This phase could last another 10 years which, if this theory is true will be followed by another 30 year period where stored up heat is disgorged back into the atmosphere adding together with the longer term global warming causing...
Ocean Acidification Threatens Economies and Cultures Around World
2014-08-21 18:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: Ocean Conservancy intern Alexis Valauri-Orton spent the last year on a journey around the world learning about ocean acidification. She visited marine communities most at risk from ocean acidification and saw firsthand how dire the need is for more research, guidance and infrastructure to prepare for the challenges ahead. She produced a video, shown below, to help make the stories from her recent blog posts come alive. Valauri-Orton encourages you to watch her video and Listen to Waiaria talk...

July Ocean Temperature Hits Record HighAgain
2014-08-18 20:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: Last month, Earths ocean surfaces tied the previous record for the hottest July during the 130 years the U.S. government has been compiling data. The National Climatic Data Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that the average temperature was 62.56 degrees Fahrenheit, 1.06 degrees above the 20th-century average. The ocean surfaces also reached that temperature in July 2009. It`s the third straight month this year that ocean surface temperatures set a record....

Marine Economy Takes Dive as Ocean Acidity Rises
2014-08-17 07:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate News Network: The waters off the U.S. state of Alaska are some of the best fishing grounds anywhere, teeming with salmon and with shellfish such as crab. But a new study, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), says growing acidification of Alaska's waters, particularly those off the southern coast, threatens the state's whole economy − largely dependent on the fishing industry. Research has highlighted the negative effect acidification of oceans can have on marine life,...
