Wind-blown Antarctic sea ice helps drive ocean circulation
2016-06-27 10:14:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
PhysOrg: A team of scientists used a computer model to synthesize millions of ocean and ice observations collected over six years near Antarctica, and estimated, for the first time, the influence of sea ice, glacier ice, precipitation and heating on ocean overturning circulation. Overturning circulation brings deep water and nutrients up to the surface, carries surface water down, and distributes heat and helps store carbon dioxide as it flows through the world's oceans, making it an important force in the...
Tariff issues stall Philippine ocean energy project

SciDevNet: Has the Philippines lost the opportunity to be the first country in the world to commercialise ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC)? In 2011, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced that the first OTEC plant in Zambales province will be operational in 2018. That would have made the Philippines the first country to scale up OTEC technology. OTEC generates power by converting the temperature differential between the warm surface waters and the deep cold ocean into vapour that expands under moderate...

328 foot-long floating barrier will collect ocean trash
2016-06-26 17:36:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
End Gadget: There are numerous efforts underway to clean the world's oceans, but The Ocean Cleanup is testing what may be both the simplest and the most ambitious. It just launched a 328 foot-long prototype floating barrier that will collect trash floating in the North Sea. If it can survive the rough conditions of those waters, the plan is to deploy a 62 mile-long (!) barrier in the Pacific Ocean and reduce the size of the notorious Great Pacific Garbage Patch -- the hope is to halve the size of the trash field...

Ventura oil spill misses the ocean, but damage on land is unclear
2016-06-26 00:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
LA Times: Before the sun rose Thursday, Kirk Atwater`s wakeup call was a noxious breeze that filled his bedroom with fumes. He stepped out of his ranch that overlooks an arroyo in the Ventura hills and saw a creek of thick, black goo traveling through the canyon that was dry just the day before. A pipeline valve had somehow opened and sent thousands of gallons of crude oil down into an arroyo that flows through the city of Ventura and reaches the ocean near the Ventura Pier. Atwater, 56, called 911...
