Film director urges Japan to improve nuclear power

Assocated Press: Dressed in white hazmat coveralls and carrying a dosimeter, documentary film director Robert Stone ventured into the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant's exclusion zone a year after a massive earthquake and tsunami triggered meltdowns in three reactors. As he encountered abandoned homes, shops and toppled cars in the scene in his new film "Pandora's Promise," Stone asked a traveling companion, "So, are you still pro-nuclear?" UK nuclear power plant contract: 80bn deal or no deal?
2013-10-21 22:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardians: The British energy secretary, Ed Davey, has signed the first new nuclear contract with French state-backed utility firm EDF, admitting only a clairvoyant could know the true cost to the taxpayer of the 35-year contract because of the uncertainty of future energy prices. Energy academics said on Monday that the deal was a gamble, but estimated the cost would be at least 80bn over the life of the two new reactors to be built in Somerset, or roughly 3.5m a day for each reactor at current rates....

United States: The farce of the Hinkley C nuclear reactor will haunt Britain for decades
2013-10-21 21:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Seven years ago, I collected all the available cost estimates for nuclear power. The US Nuclear Energy Institute suggested a penny a kilowatt hour. The Royal Academy of Engineering confidently predicted 2.3p. The British government announced that in 2020 the price would be between 3 and 4p. The New Economics Foundation guessed that it could be anywhere between 3.4 and 8.3p; 8.3 pence was so far beyond what anyone else forecast that I treated it as scarcely credible. It falls a penny short of the...

United Kingdom: We need new nuclear power to keep the lights on, says Ed Davey
2013-10-21 19:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Independent: The Energy Secretary Ed Davey insisted that new nuclear power is essential to keep Britain's lights on as he unveiled a long-awaited agreement to build two more reactors at Hinkley Point - at a cost of 2bn more than previously announced. After months of wrangling, the government has agreed to guarantee the French utility EDF about twice the current market rate for the electricity produced at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. Known as the "strike price", Edf and its Chinese partners will receive...
