Telefonica interested in AT&T's LatAm TV assets - report

(Telecompaper) Telefonica is eyeing AT&T's pay-TV assets in Latin America, according to unnamed sources cited by Reuters. AT&T bought the assets valued at around USD 10 billion as part of the deal to acquire DirectTV's units in Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and other countries. However, one of the sources added that companies such as Liberty Global are also interested in AT&T's assets in specific countries. AT&T has around 19 million pay-TV subscribers in Central and South America, but profits have been affected by currency depreciation in countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela.

Dec 14 Telekom Austria wants to play a "key role" in any future consolidation in the European market but an acquisition of Serbian provider Telekom Srbija would not be a good choice for the company, its chief executive said in a newspaper interview. Whether any consolidation takes place in the sector will depend on competition authorities, Chief Executive Alejandro Plater told Austrian daily Wirtschaftsblatt in an interview published on Monday.

Verizon interested in Yahoo web business

(Telecompaper) Verizon would explore a possible acquisition of Yahoo! if a deal made sense, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said. Speaking at an investor conference in New York, reported by Bloomberg, Shammo said that while it still wasn't clear what Yahoo's board has planned for the company, Verizon would take a look if it were to be offered up for sale. Yahoo directors met last week to discuss the company's strategy and planned spin-off of its stake in Alibaba. According to some reports, it's also looking at selling its core web business. "If we see there is a strategic fit and it makes sense for our shareholders and we can return value, I mean we'll look at it, but at this point it's way too premature to talk about that one," Shammo said at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference.
