Optical Fiber enables stress analysis over large areas.

2013-05-02 14:28:17| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

With All Grating Fiber, sensors can be positioned adjacent to one another, making it possible to monitor changes throughout structure and see how mechanical influences at one point can affect another. DTG-LBL-1550-AGF is low bendloss fiber with densely spaced Draw Tower Gratings over full length, breaking strength of >5% strain, and operating temperature of -180 to +200°C. Used with OFDR system, fiber enables precise measurements with spatial resolution down to a few millimeters. This story is related to the following:Optical Fibers

Power Plants Use Rivers For Cooling, But Cause Stress To The Environment

2013-04-22 22:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

RedOrbit: When thermoelectric power plants convert water to steam to turn large turbines and create energy, theyre left with plenty of whats known as waste heat. This waste heat has to go somewhere and either flows up into the atmosphere or back into the rivers or ponds where these factories source their fresh water. To better understand where this waste heat goes and how it affects the environment, scientists from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and the City College of New York (CCNY) ran a pair...

A vacancy has arisen for a Stress Engineer with Astrium in Stevenage. Working on Earth Observation and Science missions, and Commercial Telecoms Satellites, the team will be embarking some brand new developments in technology over the coming years, and this is an opportunity to be involved with projects from concept through to delivery of hardware. The successful applicant will be responsible for independently completing all tasks required by supervision, in the allocated time, to demonstrate that the structure design meets its strength and stiffness requirements. The role will incorporate participating in team discussions and reviews to achieve an efficient design, and assisting the lead stress engineer on projects. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows To identify all strength and stiffness requirements and ensure that they are valid. To perform all structural analysis necessary to ensure that all strength and stiffness requirements are met with a minimum mass design. To ensure that the design incorporates all features necessary to meet the strength and stiffness requirements. To provide a detailed definition of all structural testing required to verify that the strength and stiffness requirements are met. To monitor these tests and write a test assessment report that demonstrates that requirements have been met and that the pretest analysis was of sufficient accuracy. Write clear and concise strength summary reports demonstrating adequate strength margins for all significant possible modes of failure. Write other associated analysis documentation. Provide design support to manufacture to ensure that strength and stiffness requirements are met for all nonconformances to design with appropriate corrective action. To present strength and stiffness analyses and test requirements and assessments at formal design reviews. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience Degree or equivalent in Mechanical or Aeronautical or similar related discipline. Proficient in using external and internal software tools. To have a good understanding of analysis techniques and methods for light weight structures strength and stiffness prediction.
