Target Corp. posted a surprise increase in third-quarter profit as sales in the U.S. topped the company's own expectations, a promising start to the tenure of new Chief Executive Brian Cornell who's trying to restore luster to the big-box retailer. Target's profit rose 3.1% in the period as sales at established U.S. stores rose 1.2%, ahead of the company's August projection of same-store sales rising up to 1%.

The Only Surprise Is That It Took This Long...The First Ebola Class Action Has Been Filed

I am always amused by the manner in which class action lawyers attempt to capitalize on current events and public fears in bringing a "cutting edge" lawsuit that will garner a great amount of media attention. Although the Ebola headlines are giving way to the election news, last week, the first Ebola related class action lawsuit was filed, presumably based in part on hopes to ride the wave of public attention on this health crisis.

Exxon posts surprise profit jump on refining

ExxonMobil Corp. profits rose 3 percent in the third quarter as strong refining performance offset lower revenues from falling oil prices and production. The company said Friday it earned $8.07 billion on revenue of $107.49 billion in the third quarter.

Malware writers behind Koler, a bad app that attacks Android devices, have upped their game with a new variant of the pernicious program. In its original version, Koler hijacked phones it landed on and wouldn't set them free until a ransom was paid. This latest strain of the malapp also does the ransomware thing, but it takes its malignancy a step further.
