Description Mechanisms Engineer in the Mechanisms Section, Structure and Mechanisms Division, Mechanical Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality. The postholder will report to the Head of the Mechanisms Section. Duties The Sections main activities cover the following technical areas space mechanisms such as for deployment and pointing or holddown and release, solar array drives, and reaction wheels, tribology, pyrotechnics, and space mechanical systems for satellites and launchers. Duties will include establishing relevant technology development requirements under the Agencys basic and supporting technology programmes defining, initiating and monitoring appropriate industrial research and development activities providing support to projects, programmes and general studies participating in project reviews and procurement package evaluations identifying critical development problems and assisting in their resolution, as well as assessing mechanisms development and verification test programmes monitoring applicable technological trends and maintaining stateoftheart expertise in the relevant domains pursuing product developments for science and commercial space market applications in the field of space mechanisms fostering new application areas for multidisciplinary mechanical systems, placing emphasis on innovative concepts, cuttingedge technologies and system architectures that can lead to potential breakthroughs in mission capabilities defining relevant infrastructure requirements in terms of testing, standards and numerical simulation contributing to dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency. Duties may also include supporting other activities within the postholders field of competence. Technical competencies General background and specific experience in the technical domains covered by the position Handson hardware experience Understanding of related technologies, RD trends and the industrial landscape Project support experience in a relevant domain Experience with laboratory or field testing of relevant technical equipment Preparation of procurement activities for technology development and innovation e.g. statements of work, proposal evaluation Experience in the management and monitoring of industrial activities and reviews Space Engineering Standards, preparation and implementation Behavioural competencies Communication Innovation Creativity Teamwork Problem Solving Continuous Learning Education Applicants for this post should have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in mechanical or aeronautical engineering or a similar field, with several years experience in the development of mechanisms for space or aeronautical applications. Additional requirements Knowledge of space tribology, ball bearings, electrical motors and sensors is required. In addition, experience in one or more of the following fields of expertise will be considered a strong asset Design, analysis and test of control laws for open and closed loop mechanisms driven by electric actuators, including prediction of related microvibrations Verification, through simulation and test, of the pointing performance of mechanisms driven by electric actuators when subjected to spacecraft microvibrations Multibodymultidisciplinary simulations of complex mechanism systems, their kinematics and non linear coupling with flexible structures Electromagnetic device design, modelling and optimisation, with emphasis on electric motors and actuators for space applications. A vacancy for a Senior Spacecraft Mechanisms Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence Space Limited in Stevenage. You will be responsible for detailed design, development and verification activities under limited supervision of high reliability, complex space mechanisms for both telecoms spacecraft and science missions You will work closely with senior team members to continue development of knowledge of space mechanism design and verification Some delegation and supervision of junior engineers Mentoring and knowledge transfer to less experienced and junior members of the team. The successful candidate will be subject to security clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include Understanding and working to a detailed technical specification. Under limited supervision, perform mechanisms related design, analyses and tradeoffs. Preparation of reports for management, project and department. Carry out tradeoffs and preliminary concept designs for early phase science studies. Develop and maintain excellent customer working relationships. Assist in preparation of technical elements for bids and proposals. Support other Airbus Defence and Space departments on studies e.g. ENS and ESA Phase A studies. Support existing projects within Airbus Defence and Space in a Mechanisms Expert role, when required. Authoring of clear and concise technical reports and processes, demonstrating a clear understanding of mechanism design, manufacture and test. Contribute to work packages to ensure tasksactivities are completed on time, on cost and on quality. Support the project responsible engineer RE during development, qualification and acceptance verification and validation. Work closely with the project manager to ensure schedule and budgets are closely adhered to. This role will involve some travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering with experience in the SpaceAerospace or AutomotiveF1 industry would be appreciated. Proven experience working with Complex, high reliability Mechanisms. A sound working knowledge of Motors, Gearboxes, Tribology and understanding the selection of Materials for harsh environments. Ability to do hand calculations for stress and thermal. Basic electrical knowledge, particularly working with Ohms Law. Experience of environmental and functional testing. Hands on design experience of 3D CAD tools and other engineering tools. Excellent presentation and communication skills. Fluency in English. A vacancy for a Principal Product Assurance Engineer Mechanisms has arisen within the Mechanisms and Cryogenic Coolers Group of Airbus Defence Space in Stevenage. Spacecraft Mechanisms are Single Point Failures and, as such, are designed, manufactured and tested to the most rigorous standards. As the Principal Product Assurance Engineer in the Mechanisms Group you will be responsible for ensuring that our exacting quality requirements both from Airbus and its Customers are implemented and maintained at all levels of the product lifecycle, from parts and subassembly procurement through to final equipment delivery. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include The Principal PA Engineer will either prepare, chair and run, or will actively participate and contribute to all levels of Gate review conducted on the mechanisms and the procured subassemblies, whether this be from the initial design phase for new product development, e.g. PDR, CDR or for generic equipment repeat builds, EQSR, MRR, MPCB, MIP, TRR, TRB, DRB. You will be responsible for the management, control, and disposition of all NonConformances in accordance with Airbus Procedures and Systems and any specific customer requirements including first and second closure, lessons learnt, and risk analysis. Working as part of a small dedicated equipment team with the Product Manager, Responsible Engineer, and other supporting disciplines, you will possess excellent communication and facilitation skills which enable you to interface at all levels, internally within Airbus Defence and Space nationally and internationally and with internal and external suppliers and customers. The Principal PA Engineer will also be responsible for the day to day supervision and guidance of the PA team within the Mechanisms Group, and for supporting the Mechanisms Group Head as part of the first line team. On a monthly basis you will produce a quality report and a nonconformance analysis report. You will monitor or produce metrics as deemed relevant or necessary, and will participate in the monthly business reviews. Whilst actively supporting the production and supply of Spacecraft Mechanisms within a small dedicated team, the Principal PA Engineer must have the confidence and strength of character to always put Quality First. This role will involve some travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Degree in a related Engineering discipline Electrical or Mechanical. Strong experience as a Quality Professional in the Space, Aerospace, Defence or related industry.
