UN draft stresses risk of global warming, from economy to health
2013-11-08 13:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: Global warming poses a mounting threat to health, economic growth, crops and water supplies, according to a draft report by top scientists that puts unprecedented emphasis on the risks of a changing climate. A leaked 29-page draft by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), about the impacts of rising temperatures and due for release in March 2014, mentions "risk" 139 times against just 41 in its last assessment in 2007. The increased stress on risk may make the case for cutting...
UN says global warming temperature threshold 'ever-more elusive'
2013-11-06 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Deutsche-Welle: A new UN report has warned the chances of limiting an increase in global temperature to two degrees Celcius this century are becoming increasingly slim. The news comes ahead of the body's annual climate talks next week. By 2020, emissions of so-called "carbon dioxide equivalents" will reach around 59 billion tons, The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) said in a report presented in Berlin on Tuesday. In order to achieve the two-degree goal, that number should not be more than 44 billion tons by 2020....

Levels of gases in atmosphere blamed for global warming increased to record high in 2012
2013-11-06 13:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Independent: Atmospheric volumes of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change hit a new record in 2012, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said on Wednesday. "For all these major greenhouse gases the concentrations are reaching once again record levels," WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud told a news conference in Geneva at which he presented the UN climate agency's annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin . Jarraud said the accelerating trend was driving climate change, making it harder to keep global...
Global warming is changing soil chemistry, to the detriment of plant growth in the worlds dry regions
2013-11-04 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Summit County: After studying soil samples at more than 200 sites worldwide in a networked research projects, scientists say global warming is likely to change the balance of soil nutrients in drylands -- to the detriment of plant growth. Drylands cover about 41 percent of the earths surface. The study suggests that people -- about 20 percent of the world`s population -- who depend on those ecosystems for crops, livestock forage, fuel and fiber will find their resources increasingly restrained. The findings...

Global Warming Could Shrink Mammal Size
2013-11-04 12:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World News: Global warming in the past shrunk the size of mammals and according to experts, it might happen again. Philip Gingerich at University of Michigan and his colleagues recently presented a research at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. They said that there is enough evidence to support the idea that mammals could shrink in size due human-led global warming. Previous research, too, has shown that rising carbon dioxide levels could reduce animal body size in the future. The first time global...
