Biogen's Alzheimer's drug slows mental decline in early study

An experimental drug from Biogen Idec Inc became the first Alzheimer's treatment to significantly slow cognitive decline and reduce what is believed to be brain-destroying plaque in patients with early and mild forms of the disease, according to a small study likely to reignite hopes of a treatment. Alzheimer's affects 15 million people worldwide, a number that is expected to grow to 75 million by 2030 without effective treatments, likely costing billions of dollars year.

Ex-Monterey professor's mental state evaluation expected in two months

In two months, two court-appointed doctors evaluating the mental state of a former Naval Postgraduate School professor, accused of slaying his ex-wife in 2012, will report back their findings to the court. The judge presiding over Lawrence Jones' case has scheduled March 24 for a hearing on the doctors' report.

California struggles in national study of mental health access and care

Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente has taken heat recently on the issue of access to mental health care , but a new national study suggests that any such problems extend throughout the Golden State's health-care landscape. California ranked 37th of the 50 states on mental health care access, according to the new national Mental Health America report, "Parity or Disparity: The State of Mental Health in America."

When Vice President Joe Biden , perhaps overcome with excitement during his speech congratulating President Obama on the passage of health care reform, dropped an F-bomb on live television, it seemed like he was onto something and many would benefit from this landmark legislation, especially for those in need of drug, alcohol, and mental healthcare treatment. One of the key features of the American Affordable Care Act or Obamacare involves the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity act, which in layman terms means insurance companies now are required to treat drug, alcohol, and mental health claims the same as other medical conditions like cancer or diabetes.
