CSX Corp. said Tuesday that profit rose 4.5% during its latest quarter, though falling coal volume weighed on revenue, which retreated 5.5% and came in below analysts' estimates. Low fuel costs helped the rail company slash expenses to $2.04 billion from $2.24 billion during the same period a year ago.

Marten Transport, Ltd., a refrigerated carrier, raised second quarter net income more than 6% to $8.4 million, or 25 cents per share, driven by continued growth in dedicated freight business. The Mondovi, Wisconsin-based carrier's revenue fell 3% to $163.6 million from $168.4 million because of a $13 million decline in fuel surcharge collections.

Platform Specialty Products (PAH) Stock Rises After $2.1 Billion Alent Acquisition

Alent shareholders will receive 503 pence per share in cash as part of the deal, a 49% premium over Alent's closing price on Friday. Platform made the acquisition in an effort to bolster its performance applications business and compliment its MacDermid unit, which produces chemicals used in electronics, automotive, printing and offshore oil drilling industries, the company said.

Gulf stock markets came off early highs to close mixed on Sunday, while Egypt continued to rebound but low trading turnover cast doubt on whether any extended recovery was beginning. Buying of beaten-down blue chips boosted the Saudi index as much as 0.8 percent in early trade, but it ended 0.3 percent lower.
