A vacancy has arisen for a Principal Stress Engineer with Astrium in Stevenage. Working on Earth Observation and Science missions, and Commercial Telecoms Satellites, the team will be embarking on some brand new developments in technology over the coming years, and this is an opportunity to be involved with projects from concept through to delivery of hardware. We are looking for Lead Engineers with strong technical capability, with the ability to manage projects and support junior engineers, who are looking to follow a wellestablished career framework.The successful candidate will independently lead major projects and design teams, and will be responsible for maintaining a high degree of technical competency in their specialised field. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows Independently plan analysis campaign for team and ensure completion of all tasks required, in the allocated time, to demonstrate that the structure design meets its strength and stiffness requirements. Perform or supervise all structural analysis necessary to ensure that all strength and stiffness requirements are met with a minimum mass design. Ensure that the design incorporates all features necessary to meet the strength and stiffness requirements. Provide a detailed definition of all structural testing required to verify that the strength and stiffness requirements are met. Monitor these tests and issue a test assessment report that demonstrates that requirements have been met and that the pretest analysis was of sufficient accuracy. Write clear and concise strength summary reports demonstrating adequate strength margins for all significant possible modes of failure. Write other associated analysis documentation. Provide design support to manufacture to ensure that strength and stiffness requirements are met for all nonconformances to design with appropriate corrective action. Present strength and stiffness analyses and test requirements and assessments at formal design reviews. Prepare and maintain work plans, schedules, work package descriptions and costs. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience Educated to Degree Level or equivalent in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, or similar related discipline Extensive experience of Stress Engineering, ideally within the Aerospace or Space Sector Appreciation of the relevant design drivers and associated manufacturing issues in their specialist field To be conversant with and to apply as appropriate, analysis techniques and methods for light weight structures strength and stiffness prediction that are generally common to spacecraft structures analysis. These will include classical hand analysis and computer techniques including the use of the industry standard finite element programme with prepost processing software Able to establish and execute work plan and cost estimate for projects Experience of training, advising and supervising team members Excellent presentation and communication skills An in depth knowledge of Nastran Knowledge of Femap andor MathCAD is desirable TO APPLY click here
