Porter Ranch leak puts mysterious methane in spotlight

San Diego Union-Tribune: Methane is a democratic molecule. You make it, I make it, cows and coal mines emit it. So do termites and multinational oil companies. When NASA looks for life on other planets, they dont look for little green men, they scan for methane. Methane is the ultimate sign of life though a massively mysterious, and invisible, one. The mysteries surrounding methane remind us that we barely know our own planet. For as long as weve had an oil and gas industry, weve had methane leaks from pipelines,...

Los Angeles-area methane leak declared permanently sealed

2016-02-18 22:36:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: An underground natural gas pipeline rupture that caused the largest-ever methane leak in California has been permanently capped, paving the way for thousands of displaced Los Angeles residents to return home, state regulators said on Thursday. The leak, which began in October and accounted for a fourth of all daily methane emissions statewide at its height, was confirmed by a series of independent laboratory tests to have been successfully sealed as of Wednesday night, officials said. The leak...

Harvard Study: U.S. Likely Culprit Global Spike Methane Emissions

2016-02-18 16:40:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Common Dreams: New research has linked the U.S. to the massive rise in global methane emissions. Bobby Magill reported on the Harvard University study on Climate Central Tuesday. Using satellite data, the researchers found that methane emissions in the country rose more than 30 percent over the 20022014 period and that increase "could account for 3060 percent of the global growth of atmospheric methane seen in the past decade," the study`s abstract states. Though the study does not attribute the increase...

How To Reduce Methane Emissions With Thermal Mass Flow Meters

The flare gas discussion is heating up again. According to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. oil production is at an all-time high, and so are the harmful methane emissions from leaks, flaring and venting. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell has proposed to update 30-year-old regulations in order to reduce the excess release of natural gas into the atmosphere from oil and gas operations on public and American Indian lands.
