As floods hit, Pakistans Kalasha people fear for their way of life
2015-11-09 10:19:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: For Akram Hussain, unprecedented monsoon floods that drenched his Hindu Kush mountain valley this year were a danger to more than just homes and crops. His 4,000-strong Kalasha people, who live in three remote valleys in north-west Pakistan, preserve an ancient way of life, including animist beliefs at odds with Pakistans dominant Islamic state religion. That has led to threats by the Taliban, who call them kafirs, or non-believers. Outsiders, looking for arable land, also have increasingly...
Telstra, Ericsson hit 1 Gbps LTE milestone
2015-11-09 09:40:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Ericsson and Australian operator Telstra have reached what they describe as a key milestone in the development of the LTE standard by attaining record download speeds of up to 1 Gbps on a commercial mobile network. In a live test, the companies aggregated 100MHz of Telstra's spectrum holdings across five separate 4G channels to achieve downlink speeds in excess of 950 Mbps, as measured by the UDP speed test application. In a blog post, Telstra said the 100MHz of spectrum was aggregated across the 700MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, and 2600MHz (2x 20MHz) bands, and delivered to a Cobham Aeroflex TM500 mobile device. "With LTE now reaching 1 Gbps speeds in reality, LTE technology could be argued to be finally moving beyond the 4G barrier," said Mark Wright, Telstra's group managing director of networks, adding that "the days of commercial 1 Gbps services in the market are coming."

Megacities hit hard by surging sea levels even at 2C rise: study
2015-11-09 00:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Agence France-Presse: Large swathes of Shanghai, Mumbai, New York and other cities will slip under the waves even if an upcoming climate summit limits global warming to two degrees Celsius, scientists reported Sunday. A 2 C (3.6 Fahrenheit) spike in Earth's temperature would submerge land currently occupied by 280 million people, while an increase of 4 C (7.2 F) -- humanity's current trajectory -- would cover areas lived on by more than 600 million, the study said. "Two degrees Celsius warming will pose a long-term,...
