Microsoft smartphones take aim at niche markets - report
2015-10-05 09:57:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Microsoft is expected to announce at least two high-end Lumia smartphones at a media event in New York on 6 October, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources, who added that the company is no longer going for the mass market but for niche markets such as business, when it hopes its smartphone will have a competitive advantage. Microsoft is betting that shoppers and mobile-application developers will find it alluring to buy Windows smartphones, or write applications for them, in tandem with Windows PCs. To lure app makers who have treated Windows smartphones as an afterthought, Microsoft has made it easier to repurpose their iPhone or Android apps for Microsoft phones. People close to Microsoft say success at proliferating Windows 10 -the company aims to have it installed on 1 billion devices by mid-2018- would give a huge lift to Windows smartphones.

Smartphones have less memory than advertised - Test-Achats
2015-09-30 11:46:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Belgian consumer organisation Test-Achats/Test-Aankoop has submitted a complaint to the Jury for Ethical Practices, regarding the advertised capacity of smartphones. Test-Achats said that smartphones sold actually have less free storage included than advertised. The organisation gave two examples: the Apple iPhone 6 16 GB offers a truly available internal memory of 10.90 GB while the Samsung Galaxy S6 32GB has in fact only 24.70 GB of internal memory available. Test-Achats is demanding that manufacturers clearly state how much free gigabytes their devices actually have.

From spies to smartphones: Britain's Aga set for another new chapter
2015-09-22 13:51:06| Industrial Machines - Topix.net
LONDON: The sale of oven maker Aga Rangemaster to a U.S. owner with global ambitions caps the transformation of a quintessential English country brand created by some of the biggest names in global design, advertising: and espionage. The acquisition of Aga for US$202 million by Middleby Corporation follows a brief bidding war with U.S. rival Whirlpool for the maker of the colourful cast-iron stoves that can weigh as much as a male polar bear, cost US$18,000 and, in older versions, take two days to heat.
