Google Lobbies For 3.5 GHz Band To Provide Cheaper Wireless

2015-01-10 13:32:40| wirelessdesignonline News Articles

With the intent of making alternative wireless services available, Google is lobbying the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to open up the mostly vacant 3.5 GHz spectrum. Vast amounts of low-cost bandwidth could be available at a price that would undercut services from larger carriers. As prices for access to traditional wireless spectrums continue to soar, this alternative could be a boon for consumers.

T-Mobile to test Ericsson LTE small cell in 5 GHz band

2015-01-05 17:09:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Ericsson announced plans to use unlicensed spectrum to help boost indoor mobile phone coverage. The company said it aims to be the first to offer License Assisted Access (LAA) small cells, expected to hit the market in Q4 2015. T-Mobile US plans to start testing the small cells this year already. LAA is an LTE-Advanced technology that enables carrier aggregation of licensed spectrum with unlicensed bands to enhance network coverage and capacity. Using only 4 percent of the 5 GHz band, LAA can provide up to a 150 Mbps speed increase to smartphone users, Ericsson said. Ericsson said its LAA devices also incorporate "fair sharing" within the 5 GHz band, to accommodate Wi-Fi devices already using the band. Ericsson is adding LAA to its indoor small cell portfolio including the Ericsson Radio Dot System for medium and large buildings and the Ericsson RBS 6402 Indoor Picocell for smaller buildings under 50,000 square feet.

Trai recommends prices for 2,100 MHz band

2015-01-02 14:34:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Indian telecom regulator TRAI has issued its recommendations for the auction of spectrum in the 2,100 MHz band. The Department of Telecom asked the regulator to speed up its opinion on the frequencies, so they can be auctioned in February alongside the planned sale of 800, 900 and 1,800 MHz band rights. Trai recommended reserve prices for the 3G band ranging from INR 80 million per MHz in the Northeast region, where a discount was recommended in order to encourage higher penetration, to INR 4.46 billion per MHz in the most populous part of the country, Delhi. The regulator recommended that operators that already hold spectrum in the 2,100 MHz band remain subject to the roll-out requirements from the auction in 2010, while new operators in the band face a reduced time of three years, rather than five years, to meet the initial coverage requirement. In addition, in bands with more than two blocks of 2x5 MHz available in the upcoming auction, no operator should be allowed to acquire more than two blocks in a region. Trai noted as well that the 15 MHz nationwide in the 1,800 MHz band to be released by the Ministry of Defence and the frequencies returned by STel after it halted services should also be included in the auction. The prices proposed by Trai are higher than the reserve prices set in the auction in 2010 but lower than the actual bids received then.
