Google wins DARPAs robotics challenge, wonders if it was a good idea to turn down future military contracts

DARPA's Robotic Challenge took place in Florida over the weekend, pitting some of the world's most advanced humanoid robots against each other in a series of complex tasks, and rather fortuitously for a famously acquisitive Silicon Valley company, the winning robot was fielded by a company called Schaft -- a Japanese company that was recently acquired by Google as part of its rather sudden segue into robotics. Google now officially, and probably not unintentionally, has its hands on the best humanoid robot in all the land.

UK - The Pig Idea campaign, which is calling for food waste to be put back on the menu for pigs in Britain and across Europe, has issued a response to claims by representatives of the National Pig Association (NPA) and the British Pig Executive (BPEX) that the campaign, while "well-intentioned" and "superficially attractive", is guilty of over-simplifying the issue of feeding waste food to pigs.

Snowden Amnesty Idea Kicked Around

NSA official Rick Ledgett, who has been with the agency for 25 years, suggested offering whistleblower Edward Snowden amnesty, but Gen. Keith Alexander squashed the idea. About 31,000 of the possibly 1.7 million documents Snowden stole from the agency contain information that could be helpful to enemies of the U.S., Ledgett said, and it would be worth discussing a Snowden amnesty to secure them.
