Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation Grows With Gelbvieh
2013-04-05 22:09:37| Beef
American Simmental Association (ASA) and the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) are pleased to announce to beef industry stakeholders that their joint, multi-breed genetic evaluation (MBGE) now includes the data of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA). The addition of Gelbvieh data to the Spring 2013 EPDs pushes the multi-breed dataset to over 11.5 million animal records, and includes four of the seven largest beef breeds in North America - Canadian Angus Association (CAA) having been included since the onset of this multi-breed collaboration. read more

Genetic Discovery May Allow Lettuce Growth Even in Hot Temperatures
2013-04-01 18:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Yale Environment 360: A team of scientists has identified the specific gene in lettuce that causes the plants seeds to stop germinating in warm temperatures, a discovery they say could allow production of the food crop year-round even in the planets hotter regions. Writing in the journal The Plant Cell, the researchers say they identified a chromosome in the wild ancestor of commercial lettuce varieties that enabled seeds to germinate even in warm temperatures. When the chromosome was crossed with commercial varieties...

Scientists Awarded Grant to Probe Genetic Resistance for PRRS
2013-01-10 18:46:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: Iowa State University A team of researchers at Iowa State University (ISU) has received a $3 million grant to study genetic resistance to the costliest disease threatening the pork industry and transfer this technology to the industry. The researchers, led by Jack Dekkers, an ISU professor of animal science, will seek to identify genes in pigs that make them less susceptible to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), a viral disease that costs U.S. pork producers about $664 million a year. read more
