Virtualization software provider VMware has invested $30 million in Puppet Labs, which makes a widely used, open-source operations management software package called Puppet. VMware "has seen a strong overlap between its customer base and ours," said Luke Kanies, founder and CEO of Puppet Labs. VMware customers "have so much virtualization infrastructure that they need management tools to go with it," he said.

Orascom to acquire AAL interest in Wind Mobile Canada

(Telecompaper) Orascom Telecom Holding and Wind Mobile's founder, chairman and chief executive officer, Anthony Lacavera, have jointly announced they have entered into an agreement to transfer Lacavera's shares of Wind Mobile Canada to Orascom. Lacavera, who plans to launch a new initiative, Globalive Capital, will remain Wind Mobile's chairman and CEO until closing and will continue in a non-operational capacity as Wind Mobile Canada's honorary chair. Upon closing, Orascom will own an indirect 99.3 percent interest in Globalive Wireless Management.

Myanmar invites expressions of interest for 2 licences

(Telecompaper) The government of Myanmar has invited expressions of interest for a telecommunications licence. The government will open up the ICT industry in the country to international companies as part of its goal to increase teledensity to 75 to 80 percent in 2015-16. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will award two nationwide telecommunications services licences in the first half of this year and is now inviting expressions of interest before 25 January. The licences will be for a term of ten to twenty years and will be technology neutral. The ICT ministry also said the government is working on a new telecommunications law to liberalise the sector, which is expected to pass by June.
