Montvale-based A&P will be allowed to reduce severance payments to laid-off workers by almost half, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain said Thursday. The judge also said workers laid off in 25 impending store shutdowns will not be able to take the jobs of workers with less seniority at other stores - bad news for workers at a Clifton Pathmark scheduled to close Friday.

Scott Berens, who hopes to have four drop-off locations reopened in a couple of weeks, says the July 4th weekend fire caused an estimated $500,000 damage to his Billings, Mont., small business.
