Rambus, Micron settle patent, antitrust disputes

Rambus and Micron Technology said Monday the companies had signed a broad patent cross-license agreement, giving Micron the right to use any Rambus patent for the manufacture of specified integrated circuit products, including memories. The deal between the two companies is part of Rambus' stated strategy to collaborate with the industry to develop innovative technologies and possibly drive standards. The company which has indicated its preference to settle rather than litigate, however said earlier this year it would if required "aggressively defend our IP."

U.S. regulators have given the green light to Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's handset business, moving the deal a major step closer to wrapping up. The Department of Justice (DOJ) approved the transaction on Friday, Nov. 29, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) published the notice today on its website.

China Targets Qualcomm With Antitrust Probe

Perhaps to celebrate the anniversary of last year's U.S.-China telecoms showdown, Beijing has launched an antitrust probe into U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm. The announcement comes on the heels of comments from Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs in which he said that the company was "definitely seeing increased pressure" in China, in part because of ongoing NSA revelations.
