It would seem, despite being outfitted with the finest flash memory that money can buy, even Mars rover Opportunity isn't immune to worn-out NAND cells. After a dozen unplanned reboots in August, most likely caused by the faulty flash, NASA is moving ahead with a complete reformat of the rover's volatile memory. Back in 2004, Opportunity's sibling rover -- Spirit -- was brought back from the brink of death with a similar reformatting maneuver. Considering Opportunity has now been roving the surface of Mars for over a decade, and all it has required is some small software updates and now a format, I'd say the little rover has done rather well.

Dropbox for Business grows more security, IT admin muscles

Dropbox will continue beefing up the business version of its cloud storage and file sharing service, adding security features to shared links, full-text search capabilities and new tools for enterprise developers. For Dropbox content shared via links, it will now be possible for users to require a password for access to the content and set an expiration date for the link. This feature can be turned on by Dropbox admins now for their end users.

Cloud provider Joyent suffered an outage on Tuesday after an administrator was able to simultaneously reboot all virtual servers hosted in the company's US-East-1 data center. "It should go without saying that we're mortified by this. While the immediate cause was operator error, there are broader systemic issues that allowed a fat finger to take down a datacenter," said Bryan Cantrill, CTO at Joyent, in a post on Hacker News.
