All lots of New Year's Pretzels prepared and sold individually from the Bakery department inside the Carmel Market District located at 11505 N. Illinois St. in Carmel since Dec.26 have been voluntarily recalled by Giant Eagle, Inc. due to an undeclared walnut allergen. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, a boutique frozen-desserts brand, is closing its shops and pulling all its products from grocery stores because of possible listeria contamination, the second time this week that a U.S. ice-cream maker has recalled its desserts because of the potentially deadly bacteria. Jeni's said it initiated a voluntary recall after listeria was discovered in a sample randomly collected by the Nebraska Agriculture Department.
