Dell unveils 5K desktop monitor with almost 2x the pixels of your puny 4K display
2014-09-05 14:57:40| Extremetech
What's 27 inches across and has almost twice the pixel count of your puny 4K monitor? Dell's new UltraSharp 5K monitor, that's what. With a resolution of 5120x2880, the 27-inch monster has seven times as many pixels as your 1080p monitor, or four times as many as your 2560x1440 (1440p) monitor. It has a PPI of 218, which puts it on about par with the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display (2880x1800). When it goes on sale around Christmas time -- for $2500 -- it will finally replace IBM's mythical 13-year-old T220/T221 as the highest-res desktop monitor.

Pixels of the universe: Experiment begins to see if the universe is a 2D hologram
2014-08-27 14:00:00| Extremetech
The Fermi National Accelerator Lab near Chicago has a new toy: the Holometer. As its rather fancy name suggests, the Holometer is for testing whether our universe is actually a 2D hologram that's painted on some kind of cosmological horizon, popping into 3D whenever we attempt to observe it (i.e. always). The Holometer will gather data for the next year or so -- after which, there's a very good chance that it'll be able to tell us whether the universe is a hologram or not. And, of course, if the universe is a 2D hologram... what does that make us?

Goodbye 4K: $17,000 12K gaming PC pushes 1.5 billion pixels per second
2013-07-26 20:15:14| Extremetech
4K displays are slowly trickling out, and slowly trickling down in price. The problem with the resolution, though, is that not only are the displays very expensive, but there isn't really any native 4K media. Some games and videos look fine when upscaled to 4K, but that's not true 4K. Though the resolution is still too young to even have native media, one man decided 4K was a thing of the past, and built a 12K gaming PC.
