Johnson & Johnson said Tuesday that it plans to cut about 3,000 jobs over the next two years as the health care conglomerate works to restructure its medical devices business. The New Brunswick, New Jersey, company said that amounts to more than 2 percent of its global workforce of around 127,000 people and 4 percent to 6 percent of its employee total in medical devices.

Amid weak global markets for fertilizer products, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan shut down its Picadilly mine in southern New Brunswick for an indefinite period Tuesday, eliminating up to 430 high-paying jobs. "This is a very difficult day for our employees and our company," PotashCorp. CEO Jochen Tilk said in a statement.

The Picadilly potash operation in New Brunswick is suspending production indefinitely, resulting in the lay off of more than 400 people. The mine owner -- Saskatoon-based Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, or PotashCorp -- says a crew of 35 employees will remain to take care of Picadilly while it's idle and the rest of the workforce will be cut by 420 to 430 people.
